All students and staff are welcome. We hope to see you there!” · The CODE word of the week is: ENGAGED In case you didn’t know it, we are having a school wide contest each month to see which grade has the most CODE cards turned into the box in the cafeteria. In December, the 7th grade had the most CODE cards and got to have five extra minutes for lunch. The count is in and for the month of January the 6th grade has received the most CODE cards! Congratulations 6th grade for following the Knight’s CODE. We hope everyone enjoyed the two licorice ropes you were given at lunch yesterday. A new CODE card count starts Monday, Feb. 1st so continue to follow the CODE and get your CODE cards turned in for the grade level monthly prize as well as the drawing for individual weekly prizes! Are you following the CODE? January is drawing to a close, and with it, this last human ingenuity thought: Just think what profound impact has been made on your world by the advances in math and science over the years, the creation of thousands of works of art, music, theater, and dance, the great influence of men and women of genius (Albert Einstein, George Lucas, J.R.R. Tolkein, Madame Curie, Bill Gates), the great cultural and historical movements (like the Civil Rights Movement and Martin Luther King, Jr.), and the impact of inventions and discoveries like Guitar Hero and Apple’s iPhone). Every single person who made contributions to this short list of human achievements was once your age, sitting in school every day just like you. Their drive to express their human ingenuity was so strong that they were able to contribute great things to our world. What inventions and changes will the world see in 20 or 30 years because of YOUR human ingenuity?

We have new data that shows many of you are following the Knight’s CODE! Compared to this time last year, school discipline issues are down, including a significant decline in tardies to school. Suspensions are also down and overall there seems to be a calmer more supportive atmosphere amongst students and within the building. So, the comparison of the first semester last year to first semester this year after PBS and the Knight’s CODE has begun shows a positive trend toward improving school climate based on three factors so far—tardies to school, discipline referrals, and out of school suspensions. Keep it up Newton Knights!

January is Human Ingenuity month at Newton. We can see this IB area of interaction in the work of many famous people who have achieved great things in their lives: Michelangelo, Isaac Newton himself, Shakespeare, Mozart. They used their human ingenuity to create, transform, and improve the quality of life not just for themselves, but for all those who came later. You don’t have to be famous to use your human ingenuity. When you figure out a quicker way to walk to school, or when you discover just how to use your body to play a sport, or when you discover a different way to solve a math problem, you are engaged in human ingenuity. You, too, could be destined for greatness!
