An important part of learning is to pursue other interests either before school or after school. This could be a hobby or a favorite activity that may not be offered during the school day as a class or opportunity during our intervention/enrichment opportunities during the school day. The following clubs are currently sponsored clubs by teachers at Newton Middle School. If you are interested in joining one of the following clubs speak with the advisor of the club that you are interested in participating in.
If you would like to see a club that is not currently offered there is always the opportunity to offer a new club at Newton. Follow a few simple steps to begin the process of being a recognized club at Newton.
□ Gather a list of students (minimum of fifteen students) that would be interested in starting the club.
□ Find a teacher advisor to oversee the group of students for the club
□ Arrange with the advisor all the meeting dates for the year. The Club Coordinator recommends you meet a minimum of ten times during the school year.
□ Contact the Club Coordinator, Mr. Atherton, to receive final approval for the club. Call 303-347-3922 or e-mail
Mr. Atherton with all requests.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
Advisor: Mrs Hissem
Meeting dates and times: 2nd Semester
Much like a football or soccer team, Newton’s competitive Science Olympiad teams will prepare throughout the year for tournaments. We will begin to prepare in October for the Regional competition in Fort Collins in March. Success at the Regional competition may result in our competing in the State competition, in Golden in April. Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. Practices vary from monthly meetings to weekly study sessions to daily work as tournaments near, supported by an interlocking group of peers, coaches, parents and mentors from academia and industry.
Science Olympiad competitions are like academic track meets, consisting of a series of 23 team events. Each year a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, astronomy, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through the Olympiad, students, teachers, coaches, principals, business leaders and parents bond together and work toward a shared goal.
